When you imagine a patio door, an image of a door that opens out onto a garden or patio area springs to mind. But the term ‘patio door’ has blended over the years to include multiple entrance styles, including bifold doors, French doors, and sliding patio doors. However, a frequent question we get asked is: what is the difference between a patio door and a French door? With 3 distinctive differences, we have explained the features and characteristics of both styles below, to help you decide which door is the best option for you and your family.
The main difference between a patio and French doors is their opening mechanisms. French doors feature a double door that usually open outwards on a hinge, you can open one, whilst the other door is bolted in place or you have the option to open both doors for maximum ventilation and access. Patio doors glide along a track and are typically made up of two glass panes, the second pane stays in position, and the moveable panel slides into it to create a doorway. However, you can have more panes of glass if space allows!
Patio doors can achieve a much wider opening space compared to French doors; they can be as small as 1600mm but can be as wide as 4200mm. The maximum width of a French door is approximately 1800mm. Patio doors are great for homes that have small gardens, as you will not be restricted by protruding doors. However, they only open 50% of the entryway, whereas French doors can open up the entire space.
Sliding patio doors have a modern aesthetic, while French doors have more of a timeless appearance about them. The slim sightlines of a patio door allow for unobstructed vistas, perfect for those with picturesque sea views in Southend, Canvey Island, or Chalkwell. Alternatively, French doors radiate classic charm and can be enhanced by decorative features such as elegant Georgian bars or Old English square lead detailing.
Both French and patio doors are available in versatile uPVC or premium aluminium and can be tailored in any RAL colour, including sought-after Chartwell green, and popular shades like Anthracite Grey & black, you can design a back door that suits your taste and your family’s needs.
